The Power of a Quiet Summer Pause

As a lawyer, my life is often defined by relentless pace, constant deadlines, demanding clients, and a calendar that rarely yields to quiet. For many years, summer was my one chance to embrace spontaneity, flitting from one destination in Europe to the next, following the warm weather and the buzz of seasonal adventures.
But this July, I did something unexpected: I chose to take a two-week break, not to travel, but to slow down, refocus, and devote time to my work and myself. This period, often dismissed as the “quiet time” when many in my field and social circle are basking on Mediterranean shores, became my sanctuary for self-reflection and goal setting.
For those of us who spend our summers abroad, the allure of new places and experiences is strong. Yet there’s a unique power in intentionally stepping back when the world seems to be in relaxation mode. The end of July, just before the bustle resumes in September, offers a rare gap, an opportunity to look inward, revisit routines, and course-correct before the cycle of busyness restarts.
September has always felt like my true “New Year.” Maybe it’s the years of structured school calendars, but I naturally see this month as the moment to set intentions and map out ambitions for the coming year. By pausing in late summer—not just physically, but mentally, I set the stage for a more productive, purpose-driven September.
How I Used My Quiet Time
Instead of tacking another country onto my itinerary, I did the following:
• Reviewed my professional goals: I assessed what went well, what needs more attention, and charted practical steps for growth.
• Reinstated routines: Whether it was a consistent sleep schedule, dedicated reading hours, or morning journaling, I found comfort and focus in structure.
• Reconnected with myself: Without the backdrop of constant travel, I could tune into my thoughts, feelings, and needs in a deeper way.
• Explored self-care practices: With fewer distractions, I integrated activities that actively nourished my body and mind.
Ideas for Self-Care During a Summer Pause
• Morning walks or runs in a quiet, natural setting.
• Digital detox: Spending entire days without checking emails or social media.
• Cooking nourishing meals, trying out recipes that are simple and grounded.
• Mindful reading: Finally digging into that book pile, not just for work, but for pleasure.
• Meditation or yoga: Using guided sessions to center myself.
• Creative pursuits: Sketching, journaling, or rediscovering old hobbies.
As tempting as it can be to spend every summer moment chasing the next great adventure, I’ve come to appreciate the unmatched value of stillness. By giving myself permission to pause, I set a foundation not just for September, but for the year ahead, refreshed, focused, and ready for what comes next.
